About Us
Bridging Gaps.
Welcome to the Northeast Construction Trades Workforce Coalition (NCTWC), where we’re building more than structures—we’re constructing futures. Founded with a mission to transform perceptions and empower the next generation, NCTWC is on a mission to bridge the gap in the construction industry’s labor force.
History
Picture this: a Saratoga Builders Association board meeting, where the conversation continually circled around the echoing concerns of the construction industry—a lack of young talent. It was in this pivotal moment that a spark ignited. Enough with the talk; it was time for action. A Task Force was born—a diverse group of builders, suppliers, and like-minded professionals ready to tackle the challenges head-on.

How We Started to Bridge the Gap in the Construction Industry’s Workforce
As we navigate the evolving landscape of the construction industry, NCTWC invites you to join us. Whether you’re a parent seeking information, or a business eager to be involved, there’s a place for you in our coalition.
Building Bridges
The construction industry was grappling with a serious issue—68% of employers in the trades struggled to hire skilled workers, and 35% were severely understaffed in 2021. It wasn’t just about finding workers; it was about debunking the myths surrounding trades—too physical, poor pay, long hours.
Partnering for Impact
Recognizing the complexity of the challenge, the task force connected with local schools. What unfolded confirmed suspicions—an alarming lack of awareness about the vast career opportunities in the construction trades, coupled with prevalent misconceptions.
Changing the Narrative
Engagement with local superintendents, principals, and school counselors was the vital first step. The NCTWC team discovered a willingness to collaborate as the schools opened their doors and their minds. Then, with the support of community partners, the coalition’s educational initiatives hit the ground running.
Educational Initiatives
NCTWC took the initiative to educate students directly. Partnering with local builders, they organized programs starting with 2nd grade through high school. The sessions are educational, interactive, and give students hands-on experience with tools and technology used in construction. Career days at Curtis Lumber offer insights into the sales and operations side of the industry. Field tours of construction sites and job shadowing at local businesses provide students with real-time experiences of various trades in action.
It’s such a great event! Can’t say enough great things about the whole experience. One of the classes earned a classroom reward last week for positive behavior. This is something the teacher sets up and has them work towards earning over time. Well, when given the opportunity to pick what they want to do (usually it’s extra recess, a popcorn party, a pizza lunch) the class chose a “building party”! They want to build more! So, we’re looking for something on a smaller scale to do with them that they can put together. They are insisting that they be able to use tools! Love it! Thanks for the inspiration!
